Routine Inspections/Pro-Actives

Regular inspections that get carried out in places like pet shops, abattoirs, intensive farming units, security companies/organizations that use animals (horse and dog units), petting farms, grooming parlours, sale yards, etc.

Cruelty Complaints

The PCA goes out to complaints where there is no food, water, shelter or where the animal is being mistreated. Please note that even though there is a ‘Report’ button on the website – please be aware that urgent cruelties or emergencies MUST be reported telephonically, either via the office landline or if after hours, via the emergency phone. Also be aware to NOT use whatsapp to message through urgent cruelties or emergencies either.

Unwanted/Stray Animals

One of the ways that cruelty is prevented is when people bring in unwanted animals to the SPCA. Stray animals also get taken in where the potential owner has got seven days to claim the animal after which the animal goes up for adoption (please see adoption prices on the FAQ tab/page)

Microchipping

The SPCA also does microchipping for people who want to microchip their animals at a fee of R200

Boarding

The animal needs to be six months of age, with all the vaccinations up to date (non-negotiable). No animal can stay longer than three weeks. Please note that boarding for December fills up quickly, so start booking at the end of October already if you want a place for your animal. Cats: R80, Small Breed Dogs: R80, Large Breed Dogs: R110. If we aren’t able to take in an animal for boarding, another option for boarding is: Kismet Kennels – phone SPCA office for phone number

Education

Due to the cruelty our Inspector and Field Officer see on a regular basis, we try to educate the community on how to care for the animals that they have. We encourage sterilization of animals and responsible ownership where animals are treated with respect, kindness and humanely, where no suffering comes upon the animal

Adoptions

Please note that adoptions IS NOT the core function of the SPCA; the core function of the SPCA is to prevent cruelty. This means that cruelty complaints come FIRST and are TOP PRIORITY, so inspectors aren’t always available to do home checks immediately. Home checks will not be done over weekends, only during weekdays and not after 3pm. The Inspector doing the home check reserves the right to decline the home check. Please note that there are areas in Mpumalanga where animals CANNOT be homed because there is no SPCA in the area (please see Areas of Operation tab/page)
