Animal Wellbeing

  • Come into the kennel to view what animals are available; person interested in coming to view what animals MUST be over 18 years of age, otherwise parents MUST accompany the children
  • If interested in a dog or cat, fill in an adoption form, or if nothing of interest is seen, come back until something of interest is seen (person interested in any animal MUST be over 18 to fill in the form – and form must be filled in by the person themselves who are interested in the animal)
  • Price depends on what type of animal potential adopter is interested in
  • Once adoption form is filled in, a home check will be done (inspector reserves the right to decline the home check)
  • If home check is approved, potential adopter comes to fill in more forms and brings copy of ID and proof of residence
  • Payment is done
  • If sterilization contract is signed, it is the obligation of the adopter to take the animal back to get sterilized on the agreed date on the contract
  • If animal is over six months, it will be booked in to the vet of preferred choice and will be sterilized, microchipped and given a vaccination
  • Post home checks will be done once or twice a year
  • Things that are NOT negotiable: Sterilization MUST be done on ANY animal going out of our kennels – or a sterilization contract must be signed
  • If a sterilization contract is signed and the animal is NOT taken into the vet on the agreed date, it is considered breaking the contract, and the inspector/field officer may come and take the animal back
  • Any potential adopter from outside of Middelburg or outside of the Steve Tshwete municipal area is considered an ‘out of area’ potential adoption
  • Please note that an SPCA has to be within the area of operation for an adoption to be able to take place (see areas of operation for more clarification)
  • Please also note that the potential adopter will have to be prepared to make trips to view what is in the kennel, fill in contracts, pay and collect the animal – take note that no animal from any SPCA may be ‘transferred/transported’ to another SPCA to make this adoption process easier
  • Take note that any animal up for adoption at chosen SPCA, it is first come first serve basis – whomever fills in the form first has the option of adopting that particular animal – if home check is declined, then another potential adopter may fill in the form for that animal
  • Small Breed Adult Dogs: R900
  • Small Breed Puppies: R1100 (including Parvo test)
  • Big Breed Adult Dogs: R1100
  • Big Breed Puppies: R1300 (including Parvo test)
  • Cats/Kittens: R700

No – only the state vet and the private vets do sterilizations, please note that the Middelburg SPCA has no vet on the property

  • If the animal is a stray – if possible, please bring it into the SPCA, who will take it to one of the private vets to be examined – the vet will have the final say about what whether the animal can be treated or if it would be kinder to put the animal down
  • Please note that the SPCA does not have the funds to treat very sick or very injured animals – sometimes euthanasia is the kinder and best option
  • If it is your own animal is sick or injured, it is YOUR OWN responsibility (including your own transport) to take it to a vet, private or state – please note that it is only the private vets that are available after hours – again, the SPCA does NOT have the funds to treat your animal, so please make sure that you have the funds to care for your animal (including vet fees)
  • The only service the SPCA can provide if the animal is too sick or injured to be saved is to euthanize the animal
  • The potential volunteer needs to be over sixteen years of age and have a tetanis injection
  • A volunteer form needs to be collected at the SPCA office, filled in, brought back with proof of tetanis injection
  • Please note that volunteering only takes place on a Saturday between 09:00 and 12:00
  • The SPCA asks a donation of R700 (or whatever amount the person wanting a request for euthanasia for their animal can afford) for anyone who wants to put their animal to sleep
  • Please note that the SPCA does not handle any aggressive dogs that are running in the streets
  • If an owner has an aggressive dog that they would like to donate to the SPCA, please note that the owner will have to get calming medication from the vet before bringing the dog to the SPCA
  • Please note that aggressive dogs are NOT homed, so if an owner has an aggressive dog, it is best to have the dog euthanized
  • It is best to close dogs up in a yard that is running in the street if possible before calling the SPCA
  • Any dogs in the street that run away when being approached, it is best NOT to pursue the dog – there is a danger that the dog could land up in front of a moving vehicle
  • The SPCA will NOT pursue any dogs that run away when being approached
  • Most of the time, the SPCA gets small breed dogs in, mostly mixed breeds
  • It is extremely rare that the SPCA gets pure breed dogs in
  • It is extremely rare that we get breeds like German Shepherd Dogs, Rottweilers, Staffies, Dobermans, Boerboels, etc.
  • Any Pitbulls that we get in are usually stray, and get claimed by their owners

No – the SPCA only homes to places that are going to provide a loving environment and that aren’t going to be using their dog as a shield and defense against crime – that is why people install alarm systems with security companies.

  • Traditional/Religious slaughtering IS allowed (even in residential areas)
  • The only time the SPCA goes out is to check if the animal has got food/water and to check if the animal is being slaughtered humanely and that there is no cruelty involved
  • By Laws phone number: 083 259 3558
  • Please ensure your own animal has got calming supplements or medication during the fireworks period, as well as in a place where they aren’t able to hurt themselves if they panic
